Every terms and definition in French (in red) are followed by their equivalents in English (in blue).

ABATTANT (n. m.)
MOBILE SEAT, TIP-UP SEAT
Horizontal plank extending from one partition to the other; of rectangular shape, mobile due to hinges  attaching this wood to the back of the stall. A console and ledge may be attached to it.

ACCOTOIR (n. m.)

CAPPING RAIL
Generic term designating the horizontal plank that connects the top of the partitions and seat backs. This plank covers the elbow-rest and the nose, but these two parts may be decorated separately. The bird’s eye view of the capping rail on a plan of the building indicates the presence of choir stalls.

ACCOUDOIR (n.m.)

ELBOW-REST
Part of the capping rail, which juts forward and thus constitutes the top of the nose. The elbow-rest serves as a resting place for the arm when the person is standing.

APPUI-MAIN (n.m) (Pl. Appuis-main)
Voir Appui-main, faux.

ARM-REST
Knob or protrusion sculpted in three dimensions on the edge of the partition, permitting the user of the stall to hold the arm-rest when rising from or sitting down in the seat. See Arm-rest, false.

APPUI-MAIN, FAUX (n.m.)

ARM-REST, FALSE
Sculpture in bas-relief on the interior panel of a jouée or a terminal partition that continues and completes a series of arm-rests in the row of stalls. The carving is important stylistically and thematically but, since it is not a three-dimensional form, it serves no function..

BALDAQUIN (n.m.)

CANOPY, COVING
Ensemble of elements that cap the dorsal panels of high stalls, and especially in Iberia, of the base stalls as well.

CANOPY PARTITION
Wooden extension attached to the stall below the junction of the dorsal panel with the canopy, usually in the form of a tear-shaped medallion or a three- dimensional sculpture. It serves to support the canopy and to further separate the stall from adjacent seats. Seen only on stalls in Iberia.

CHANT (n.m.)
Face étroite d'un panneau (jouée, parclose, sellette etc.) . Syn. Rive

EDGE (RIM)
Narrow face, vertical, of a panel (jouee, partition, ledge etc). A narrow horizontal face is a rim.

CLEF PENDANTE - CLEF DE VOUTE (n.f.)

PENDANT - KEYSTONE
Sculpted element hanging from the interior or front of a canopy, or from a crest or partition, perhaps complementing other motifs. It is a keystone when it connects the intersection of the canopy's ribs.

CONSOLE (n.f.)

CONSOLE, BRACKET
Knob of wood of varied form, under the ledge and also attached to the underside of the mobile seat; often – from the thirteenth century up to the sixteenth – carved in one piece with the ledge, mobile seat and sculpture.

COURONNEMENT (n.m.)

CROWN
A general term indicating the three-dimensional elements – animal, figurative or narrative – that often surmount the panel of a base jouee.

CREST
Top border of sculpted canopy usually carved with arabesques, a series of floral or other ornaments.

CUL-DE-LAMPE (n.m.) (pl. culs-de-lampe)

CUL-DE-LAMP, CORBEL
An element against a panel supporting the base of a column, the base of an arc or ribs of a vault, often decorated with a figure or a vegetal motif.

DORSAL (n.m.,  pl. dorsaux)

DORSAL PANEL
Vertical panel that rises above the capping-rail forming an enclosure that protects the choir from winds and noise in the church. Each dorsal panel corresponds generally to one of the high stalls and also, on several sets in Spain and Portugal, to the base stalls. By extension, the term applies to the hangings placed behind the seats during certain ceremonies. Old texts occasionally use the term “haut-dossier”.

SEAT BACK and Gusset
Wood section, slightly inclined from the vertical, which comprises the back of the seat on both the base and the high stalls. A gusset, which exists only on the stalls of the cathedral of Amiens, is a small piece of wood placed at a diagonal between the back of the seat and the adjoining partition, to blend the two wooden panels.

SPANDREL, CORNER
Three-sided area framed by the curve of an arc and the angle in which the arc is contained.

INTERDORSAL (n.m.) (pl. dorsaux)

INTERDORSAL
Decoration placed between two adjacent dorsal panels: statuette, column, molding or other decoration.

JONCTION (n.f.)

JUNCTION
Capping rails of north or south and return stalls touching as a result of the placement of the stalls at right angles to the return stalls. Dorsal panels above these capping rails may also be at an angle.

JOUEE (n.f.)

JOUEE
Wooden panel, parallel to partitions, that terminates a row of base or high stalls. A Desk Jouee is the end panel of a desk.

JOUEE BASSE (n.f.)

JOUEE, BASE
The terminal jouees close the ends of a row of base stalls. The intermediate (or passage) jouees border most of the passages that provide access to the row of high stalls. The terminal jouees are at the east or west end of the stalls and are often more elaborate than the intermediate or passage stalls. The panel of the base jouee may be sculpted in bas-relief on the interior or exterior face and by three dimensional statuettes, friezes or other decorations on the edges. The panels may be plain or topped by a crown consisting of three-dimensional carvings.

JOUEE HAUTE

JOUEE, HIGH
The high jouees close each row of high stalls. They extend from the floor to the top of the dorsal panels and consist of panels, scrolls, spirals, roundels or other sculpted forms. Often ornamented with statues of saints and openwork carvings, they are capped with a canopy or simple crest that connects the tops of the terminal jouees.

JUBE

ROODSCREEN
A wall constructed on the west side of the choir to close it off from the congregation’s part of the church. There is generally a door through which the clergy and choir might enter and sometimes other openings which could be covered with curtains. The name “roodscreen” stems from the placement of a large rood, or cross, from the top of the roodscreen up to the ceiling. Return stalls of the choir followed the line of the roodscreen. These stalls and the wall were removed on orders from the pope so that the congregation might participate in the religious offices. The return stalls were sometimes sold to small parish churches, or they were destroyed.

LUTRIN (n.m.)

LECTERN
Mobile desk for song books, which could be a structure attached to the rear of a base stall or a free standing piece of furniture generally placed parallel to the north and south rows of stalls. The holes in the capping rails of the stalls were placed before designated seats, making it possible to change the place of the lecterns as required by the chanted liturgy while the readers were assigned to one specific stall. Thus the lectern was displaced rather than moving the canon from his seat.

MISERICORDE (n.f.)
Patience, forme.

MISERICORD
Console of wood, sometimes carved, supporting the ledge of the mobile seat. These three components, mobile seat, ledge and console, permit the person to rest on the ledge when the mobile seat is in the raised position and ritual requires the person to stand. Until the fifteenth century the three components were shaped and carved from a single block of wood. Syn: Mercy seat, Patience, Form.

MUSEAU (n.m.)

NOSE
Part of the capping rail that juts to the front and forms the sides of the elbow-rest. The nose, a decorative arts term, can be the sole supporter of the elbow-rest or it can be perceived as a continuation of the capping-rail. Its decoration consists of simple, double or triple molding or a sculpted frieze called the nose frieze.

PARCLOSE (n.f.)

PARTITION
Panel that separates one stall from the next and provides privacy for each monk, nun or canon. In some sets of stalls two adjacent partitions bound a stall of honor reserved for special guests. These are larger and more elaborate, like a jouee, A standard partition is usually plain but may be carved in bas-relief, marquetry or occasionally open work.

PARCLOSE DE DAIS (n.f.)

CANOPY PARTITION
Extension of wood at right angles to the canopy and at the level of junction of dorsal panel and canopy. It supports the canopy and may be carved as open work or as a bas relief in a medallion.

PASSAGE (n.m.)

PASSAGE
Space reserved between two base stalls to permit access to the high stalls. The partial row of base stalls, interrupted by the passage, is closed by an intermediate (or passage) jouee or simply by the partition of the last seat. There may be anywhere from one to five steps in the passsage to the high row.

POPPIE (n.m.)

POPPY, POPPY HEAD
A special shape, topping a jouee, exists exclusively on choir stalls in Great Britain. The panel of the jouee, generally not decorated, ends in the form of a fleur de lis which gives the impression of a head and pair of arms. The three sections are lightly carved with figures, grotesques or foliage, always symmetrically. Often multiple forms are interlaced.

PUPITRE, panneau (n.m.)

DESK, front and jouee panels
A piece of furniture with an inclined surface on supports placed before the base stalls. The surface acts as a shelf for books during religious services. The front and side (jouee) supporting panels are often carved. The desk before the high stalls is usually an extension of the capping rail of the base stalls.

RAMPE (n.f.)

RAMP
Inclined top of a jouee (passage or terminal) or desk.

SELLETTE (n.f.)

LEDGE
Upper part of a misericord, supported by the console, providing a resting place for the occupant when the mobile seat is raised. The form of the ledge varies by region and date.

SIEGE D'OFFICIANT (n.m.)

CELEBRANT STALL
An independent bench with three seats reserved for the priest, the deacon and the assistant deacon. The bench can be separated by a low or a high partition, or it can form a wide seat for three people. Generally these seats have no misericords. Sometimes carvings on these seats follow the iconographic program of the ensemble of stalls.

LOWER PANELS; LOWER BACK PANEL
Vertical section that continues the junction between the back and the floor of the stalls. On several ensembles this panel is sculpted in bas-relief.

STALLE (n.f.)

STALL
Choir seat reserved for the clergy, singers and guests. The ensemble of stalls, monumental furniture, consists of massive seats attached to each other. The idea for producing such furnishings, their layout in the liturgical choir and their orientation was mandated by the rituals of the religious services, especially of the hours (matins, prime, lauds...) and the antiphonal singing of the psalms. Originally backing onto the cloister and the roodscreen, the seats are placed facing each other, parallel to the axis of the church. Sometimes they include a section of return stalls at right angles to the other rows. The number of stalls depends on the importance of the religious community.

STALLE BASSE

STALL, BASE
Generally in a church there are two rows of stalls, high and base, on the north and south sides of the altar. The base stalls are placed before and a little lower than the high stalls. Their form is the same as the high stalls and they were generally installed at the same time. The number of base stalls is a little less than the high stalls because of the passages that interrupt them. It is rare, except in Spain and Portugal, to find dorsal panels and canopies on base stalls. In certain churches, Rodez for example, the base stalls are more recent and sculpted by other carvers in a different style. At the cathedral of Toledo the high stalls are more recent. If an ensemble of stalls is moved to another church, the high stalls, without the dorsal panels, might become the base stalls. If new dorsal panels are added, the old base stalls might become the high stalls. Other differences between base and high stalls include provision for a desk and holes for lecterns on the base stalls. On the major ensembles in Great Britain, columns supporting the canopy start at the elbow-rests of the high stalls.

STALLE HAUTE

STALL, HIGH
Generally, the high stalls are placed against a wall of the choir or between pillars that separate the choir from the ambulatory. They usually have dorsal panels that are sometimes capped with canopy and crest. Elbow-rests are not usable if columns are installed on them to support the canopy which surmounts the dorsal panels.

STALLE D’HONNEUR (n.f.)
Syn. Stalle-maîtresse.

STALL OF HONOR
Seat reserved for a high dignitary, distinguished from others in the ensemble by its form and decoration. The seat can be independent or integral with the ensemble.

RETURN STALLS
Row of stalls that follows the line of the original roodscreen (which has probably disappeared), on the west end of the choir, at right angles to the north and south rows of stalls. They may be connected to the main stalls by a junction or a space. Most of the return stalls have been removed to open the choir to the congregation. These stalls may have been sold and used in other churches, or destroyed.

TENANT (n.m.)
Syn. Support.

SUPPORTER
Heraldic term designating the motifs sculpted on the underside of the mobile seat that flank the central misericord carving. The bas-reliefs may be free-form, shaped or framed. They are found particularly on stalls in Great Britain, but also occasionally in Spain (on the Barcelona and Celanova stalls) and in France at Albi Cathedral.
